10HS Soil Moisture Sensor

Measures the dielectric constant of the soil in order to find its volumetric water content (VWC)

The 10HS is used to measure volumetric moisture content of soils and other material for scientific research and agricultural applications.

The 10HS measures volumetric water content via the dielectric constant of the soil using capacitance technology. The sensor uses a 70 MHz frequency, which minimises salinity and textural effects, making it an ideal sensor in agricultural and standard scientific projects.

More Details

The 10HS has a large area of influence. The sensor is 10cm in length, ideal in field applications for irrigation scheduling or catchment hydrology and ecology studies using wireless networks. The 10HS can be used to take continuous measurements over time through permanent or temporary burial and connection to a soil moisture meter (SMM).

10HS is an accurate, low cost sensor with 2%VWC accuracy following soil-specific in situ calibration and 0.1%VWC resolution.

The 10HS is ideally supported by the soil moisture meter (SMM), a stand-alone logging instrument with wireless option available from ICT International. With the SMM, 10HS sensors can be individually calibrated for maximum accuracy.

What is Capacitance?

The capacitance technique determines the dielectric permittivity of a medium by measuring the charge time of a capacitor, which uses that medium as a dielectric. The capacitance sensor forms a pair of electrodes and the soil acts as a dielectric. The capacitor charge time is a linear function of the dielectric permittivity of the soil.
